This Weekend With Kids
Maybe it's the heat, or maybe just midsummer languor, but what sounds really good to me right now is some unscheduled, unstructured and slow-moving time spent someplace close to home. Possibly in a hammock.
Several of this weekend's activities look to be a lot of fun - yet still sort of laid-back. That could be just the thing.
Summer ArtSplash
The downtown Summer ArtSplash series continues Friday with a reception celebrating the opening of a new photo exhibit, "A Photographer's Perspective." The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the San Joaquin County Law Library and will feature work by members of the Stockton Photography Club. Also in the law library, Jon Guerzon and students from his Jagged Lines of Imagination Academy will conduct an "art battle," completing finished pieces in a limited timeframe. (In case you can't make Friday's reception, the photography exhibit will be on display until August 3. The Law Library is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Fridays.) 20 N. Sutter Street in Stockton.
Delta Humane Society Fundraiser
The Delta Humane Society, which relies strictly on private donations to operate, is in the midst of a financial crisis. The agency needs to raise $25,000 by Sunday in order to keep open its no-kill shelter, currently housing 175 animals. A benefit concert in support of the shelter will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Whirlow's Tossed and Grilled, 1906 Pacific Avenue in Stockton.
Busy Bee Dogs
The troupe of performing trick dogs will present two local shows on Saturday: at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Linden Branch Library, 19059 E. Main Street; and at 2 p.m. at the Tracy Branch Library, 20 E. Eaton Avenue.
Drawing in Color
As part of the Haggin Museum's Second Saturdays for Families series, art educator Becky Clover presents a drawing workshop. Materials are included with regular museum admission, and no reservations are required. From 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1201 N. Pershing Avenue in Stockton.
